On Monday, May 10, 2023, a dedicated group of students, faculty, and staff from the Department of Life Sciences, Department of Chemistry, and the College of Business and Accountancy at Central Philippine University (CPU) conducted a tree growing activity at the proposed Tree Park in Brgy. Lanit, Jaro, Iloilo City. This Tree Park is an adopted area of the university as part of its community engagement efforts, which have spanned five years, and has made the barangay one of CPU's long-term partner communities.
This event was supported by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) - Iloilo City, as well as local barangay officials and community members, where the CENRO provided 200 seedlings of native tree species for the initiative.
This tree-growing activity was proposed and organized by Prof. Cherrylyn M. Macairan, a marine biologist who serves as the outreach coordinator and officer-in-charge of the Department of Life Sciences at Central Philippine University. Prof. Macairan's leadership in this initiative underscores the university's dedication to fostering sustainable practices and community involvement in environmental conservation.
Central Philippine University remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, focusing on biodiversity conservation, ecological rehabilitation, and enhancing food and nutrition security. This collaborative effort highlights the collective responsibility in promoting a greener and more sustainable future for Iloilo City.
